The surf season runs from November till March. The best month to visit would be January. As it offers the most glassy conditions and best weather for a good time for a nice winter escape.
If you are visiting for less than one month don't expect overhead surf as swells only arrive just a few days a month. Are you a beginner? Don't worry, south Sri Lanka has waves all year round for you to learn how to surf.
