Read these notes before heading out, from currents and beach hazards to sharing the lineup.
Surfing Area
Weligama is generally a beginner-friendly surf area with no major reef hazards, and you can surf freely within the designated area. However, there can be strong currents. If it’s your first time surfing here or you are not a strong swimmer, we strongly recommend hiring a local surf instructor.
Be Careful on the Beach
When walking on the sand or in the water, be careful. Pieces of wood, rocks, or other objects can sometimes wash up with the waves. Avoid touching or stepping on them.
When the Surf Is Crowded
When there are many surfers in the water, be extra careful. Follow surfing etiquette, don’t drop in on others, and give surfers enough space to avoid collisions.
Main Surf Point
If you are surfing at the main surf point, where more advanced surfers usually surf, be especially careful. Don’t drop in on others, and respect local surfers who know the area.
